i just need an idea of what color and style make-up traditional women in japan wore, sort of like geishas.
Geishas in japan used to wear a lead based white paint that they mixed with water into a paste. It was applied to with a cm of the hairline to give the illusion of a mask. The back of the neck was also often painted as kimonos and the updo revealed the nape. A burnt piece of pauwlonia wood was applied to the brows to give them a charcoal hue. Pigment sticks were used to shade the cheeks pink and usually the lower lip was painted red, or the whole mouth was made to look like a rosebud. Small and delicate. The elaborate hairstyles they wore were done once a week. Most japanese women didnt wear cosmetics unless they were wealthy or geisha.
