Zhang Huan was born in 1965 in Yang City, Nan Province, China Lives and works in New York, China. After birth, he moved to the country with his paternal grandmother and his three brothers and lived there for almost eight years. The experience was important because it allowed him to grow with nature and develop a direct relationship with him without inhibition. It later returned to An Yang and was a fairly radical approach because it is a fairly large town, about five million people. He moved to Beijing much later. The first years in the city was quite spectacular. I was very damaging, especially at school and a terrible student. I could not concentrate, are always I shot. I could not stay locked in a room, I wanted to be free. So I spent most of my time alone drawing. A This is how it started.
Three years to make the donkey was completed in 2006 and was the very first installation did after mechanical Zhang Huan moved part of its production Art in New York, back to Shanghai. The artist was both surprised and dismayed by the imposing presence and standardized high-rise buildings in the city. Other works, as known to increase the level of water in a pond, which was held in August 15, 1997, foresaw the participation of other performers. Forty or more participants, recent immigrants to Beijing from other parts of China were invited to enter the pond to raise the water level, an absurd gesture that nevertheless shows the far reaching effects of any movement or gesture.
Although the passage to America and the rapid growth of its international reputation has enabled Zhang to work in a more ambitious scale (Hard to Ambient / My America 1999, which was held at the Seattle Art Museum and My Australia, 2000, held at the National Gallery Australia), continued to produce works in which he was the only participant. Peace came shortly after its most famous tree of family work and shares the same concerns.
